Microsoft Issues Talent Call for Imagine Cup 2005
Global competition has been expanded to nine categories, with three being open to secondary level students for the first time
Imagine Cup 2005 is bigger and better than its predecessors with a total of US$215,000 prize fund and five additional competition categories to reflect a broader range of professional applications from visual gaming, web development to technology business plan. For the first time, three categories are open to secondary-level age students who want to test their skills in IT, web development and visual gaming.
“Imagine Cup continues to evolve, and this year we add gaming, IT and business competitions. We are very excited to see what our young technology community will bring to the table in 2005. Microsoft believes the pioneering spirit of young people is vitally important to sustain the growth and development of the high tech industry,” said Colin Png, director of the Developer & Platform Group, Asia Pacific Region at Microsoft.
The annual student contest is seen as an opportunity for future IT professionals to kick-start their careers. Last year, over 10,000 students from 90 countries participated in the competition. With the expanded number of categories, Microsoft anticipates a larger number of entries and student participants for 2005. Student teams can sign up to compete in multiple categories but are advised to submit only one entry for each category.
“Winning the Imagine Cup was a great personal achievement that brought about a very thrilling year for me, including the start of my own business, based in part on the application I developed.” said Tu Nguyen, winner of the first Imagine Cup held in 2003.
“Without a doubt, this year’s winning teams have an exciting road ahead of them. Winning the Imagine Cup is a wonderful way to showcase student innovations to the industry and the world,” Png said.
Imagine Cup is also a test of grit and perseverance for students out to prove their IT skills. For team France, “second time’s the charm” proved to be true, bouncing back from defeat at the first Imagine Cup 2003 to win last year in the Software Design Invitational, pocketing a cash award of US$25,000.
“We came together again as the same team to create an automation project. It feels wonderful to finally win the Imagine Cup last year, especially as we came so close to the title in 2003,” said Francois Beaussier of Team France. “We now hope to set up our own company and work with French software companies to make automation better.”
Imagine Cup 2005 has been expanded to nine categories to cover a wider range of technology areas now ripe for innovation. These are:
- Software Design - Create new applications that demonstrate innovation on the .NET Framework and Windows platform
- Office Designer - Develop Office-based solutions and applications that creatively solve practical office productivity problems
- Algorithm - Compete in a series of brain teasers, coding challenges and algorithmic puzzles
- Short Film - Highlight the art and science of telling a story on “the boundaries between us” - taking a project from abstract, to storyboard, to final product
- Technology Business Plan - Create a compelling and sustainable business model that uses technology to bridge the digital divide
- Rendering - Tell a story in 3d about dissolving boundaries, using artistic skills and algorithmic ability
- IT - Demonstrate proficiency in the science of networks, databases and servers, as well as analysis and decision-making
- Web Development - Create an innovative educational site for young people using ASP.NET
- Visual Gaming - Combine coding skills and algorithmic ability to devise and then implement strategy for a multi-player head-to-head game

With much enthusiasm for our native countries, Bengi Korkmaz, MBA 2, Christos Stergiou, MBA 2. and I organized a trip to Turkey and Greece this past summer. While we wanted the trip to give an opportunity to GSBers to explore the history, culture, food, nightlife, and beaches of both countries, our only constraint was time. Of course this was nothing new to GSBers, so we planned an itinerary that covered Istanbul, Bodrum (a popular summer destination on Turkey’s West Coast), and Patmos (the famous Greek Island where Sir Christos Stergiou renews his soul.
